ZAY HACKETT: A JOURNEY BUILT ON RESILIENCE, REINVENTION, AND OPPORTUNITY AT NORFOLK STATE

Sometimes the road to success isn't a straight line. For Zay Hackett, the journey to Norfolk State University has been defined by perseverance, multiple stops, and an unwavering commitment to earning his opportunity.

Now wearing the green and gold for the Norfolk State Spartans, Hackett has brought valuable collegiate experience and a veteran presence to the defensive backfield. The redshirt senior transfer has continued his development while embracing a new chapter in his football career.

Listed on Norfolk State's roster as Isaiah Hackett, the 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back arrived in Norfolk after previously competing at Youngstown State and UNLV. His journey also included stops at Independence Community College and Lackawanna College, making his path to Division I football a testament to his willingness to keep working and finding opportunities to advance.

Making an Impact in the Secondary

Hackett has continued working to establish himself within the Spartans' defensive rotation during the 2026 season. His ability to contribute inrage and create opportunities for turnovers has made him an intriguing addition to the Norfolk State defense.

Through the available 2026 season data, Hackett has recorded:

  • 1 interception

  • 1 pass breakup

  • 70 defensive snaps

  • 4 receptions allowed

  • 29.7 passer rating allowed when targeted

His interception provides an important example of the ball skills and coverage instincts he brings to the secondary. Despite a relatively limited sample of defensive snaps, Hackett has shown the ability to make an impact when his number is called.

A Journey That Speaks for Itself

Hackett's story is about more than his current statistics. His progression through multiple collegiate programs illustrates the determination required to navigate the competitive landscape of college football.

From UNLV to Youngstown State and now Norfolk State, he has continued to pursue opportunities to compete and develop. Rather than allowing changes in scenery to define his career, Hackett has continued to work toward establishing himself at every stop.

That experience can be particularly valuable for a veteran defensive back entering a new locker room. His journey has exposed him to different coaching philosophies, defensive systems, and levels of competition.

The Next Opportunity

As the Spartans continue their 2026 campaign, Hackett has an opportunity to build on his experience and make an even greater impact in the secondary.

For a player who has taken the long road to Norfolk State, every snap represents another opportunity to showcase his abilities and strengthen his football résumé.

Zay Hackett's journey is a reminder that development doesn't always happen on a traditional timeline. Sometimes, the path to your destination requires taking a few different routes before finding the right opportunity.

Now at Norfolk State, Hackett is continuing to write his story — one play, one opportunity, and one season at a time.
