Coach Malik Boynton

Coach Boynton is from Detroit, Michigan. Born and raised in Downriver, Boynton began his athletic career with the River Rouge Panthers. With his father as his coach, Boynton was destined for greatness and at an early age everyone could see it.

“When he (Malik) broke Chester Taylor’s city league touchdown record that’s when I knew he had something. He always listened and always put the work in. I’m very proud of my son.” Coach Kippriol Boynton, Malik’s father.

Boynton’s mother became sick with breast cancer and that proved to be Boynton’s first true test at adversity.

“My mom held everything together. Losing her shifted my life and taught me the value of cherishing your people while they’re here. My mom was a visionary, she could see so far down the road that your actions in the moment had to be on point or she was going to let you know. She taught me accountability and grit for sure!” Malik Boynton on his mother’s impact.

After she passed away in 2010, Boynton transferred to Melvindale High School per her request. There — Boynton became touted as “the best athlete downriver” during that time period.

“We had a lot of talent in the area. I think what separated me was how I conducted myself off of the field. There were plenty guys that were bigger, faster, and stronger than me… I had the mental edge because I was more prepared and a lot more mentally tough than a lot of those guys.”

Following a stellar career that ultimately landed Boynton in his high school’s hall of fame, Boynton received a full-ride scholarship to Austin Peay State University. There he became an instant starter at receiver for the Governors, after a very strong fall camp. Boynton then started every game of his career as a wide receiver, kick returner, and defensive back. Boynton was also on Leadership Council all four years and Team Captain his final year in the program.

Austin Peay was 1-46 prior to Coach Will Healy appointing Boynton as a captain… the next year they went 8-1 in FCS play — marking the most historical turnaround in college football history.

“Malik! I can’t put into words how important you were to the turnaround here. Your have been a great leader, done everything we’ve asked of you, and played great football. The change of this place has your name written all over it.
